Looking for luxury accommodations for your stay in Edmonton? These high-end hotel recommendations will get you started.

People traveling to Edmonton will find that accommodations in town run the gamut, from basic hostels to boutique hotels, with most hotels falling somewhere in the middle. But there are Edmonton luxury accommodations to be found; these are primarily centered around the downtown core and include the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, the Sutton Place Hotel Edmonton, and the Matrix Hotel Edmonton.

The Edmonton Fairmont Hotel MacDonald

The Fairmont Hotel MacDonald has been a downtown Edmonton landmark since 1915, standing stately on the edge of the North Saskatchewan River Valley. As the only Edmonton property rated Four Diamond by CAA, the Hotel MacDonald is the epitome of luxury in Alberta's capital. Frequented by Leonard Cohen in the 1960s, it can boast of more than a few rich and famous guests in its storied history, including Queen Elizabeth II. Its 199 guest rooms are offered in seven classes, not including the 18 suites that range from the lovely Lois Hole Suite, named for the former beloved Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, to the supremely stately Queen Elizabeth II Suite, with two stories and two bedrooms to match.

Guests dining at the Hotel MacDonald Edmonton can enjoy a divine dinner at The Harvest Room, drinks in the Confederation Lounge, and the famous Sunday Brunch in the Empire Ballroom. The hotel also caters to special diets, such as celiac and vegan, and offers a special light, nutritionally optimized menu.

The Sutton Place Hotel

Part of the Sutton Place Grande Hotels Group, Edmonton's Sutton Place Hotel merges the class executives expect with the comfort they desire. According to its website, the hotel promises to "cradle you in a palm of luxury" in its downtown suites and guest rooms, which range from standard accommodations to its signature Royal Suite, rising two stories high. As centrally located as you can get, Sutton Place connects via pedway to a number of the city center's most important buildings, and guests may need never set foot outside.

The Sutton Place Hotel Edmonton offers onsite dining at Capitals Restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a special executives lunchtime menu served in 15 minutes or less. Each month, Capitals offers its sommelier's selections, treating food and wine pairing as an art form.

Matrix Hotel Edmonton

With a design built around the four elements, Edmonton's downtown Matrix Hotel offers both standard guest rooms and a range of plush one-bedroom suites. While the Sterling and Platinum Suites both include wet bars, among other amenities, the Matrix outdoes itself with its Onyx Suite. Spread over 857 square meters, the Onyx Suite features a spectacular walk-out terrace with a gorgeous city view and built-in facilities for an outdoor barbecue bash.

Attached to the Matrix Hotel is the award-winning Wildflower Grill, which applies traditional French culinary techniques to classic Canadian cuisine, making good use of a wood-fired grill in the process.
